3 Things You Need to Do Before the Wedding For a Happy Married Life

Posted May 27, 2022 | First time home buyers

Are you and your significant other already planning for your big day? Wedding preparations can be stressful - all that meticulous planning to make sure your nuptials can be the #BestWeddingEver. But don’t forget - you and your future spouse still need to plan out your life together after you say ‘I do’. In the midst of your busy wedding preps, make sure you also prepare for your happily ever after with these simple steps:

1. Work out your household budget

Let’s be real - most married couples fight the most over finances. So even before you start your life together under one roof - considering you will be living on your own - make sure you talk about how you would handle your household budget. Some couples like to leave the budgeting to a specific person who may be more adept in doing so. Some prefer dividing the budget and taking on specific items in the expenses. While some are more OC about it and even create a separate bank account for “operational expenses” - so as not to mix personal and household finances. Each couple has their own style of budgeting – what’s important is to discuss this ahead of time and come up with a plan that both you and your future spouse can agree upon.

2. Map out your calendar

A wedding is not only the union of two persons but also the coming together of two families. And while you used to have only one family to spend time with when you were single, you must now consider your better half’s family as well. To prevent any issues that may surface, talk with your spouse on how you plan to spend your weekends and holidays - and with whom. Big holiday gatherings like Christmas and New Year must be plotted in advance to allow enough bonding time for both families. For example, you may opt to spend Christmas Eve with your family, and Christmas Day with your spouse’s family to be fair. If they are located too far apart, you may also choose to spend Christmas with one family, and New Year with the other. The same goes for weekends, summer vacations, and family gatherings.

3.Set your house rules

Living together 24/7 is one of the best things about being married - but can quickly become the worst if you don’t see eye to eye on how things should be done around the house. Remember that both of you come from different households that you’ve grown accustomed to over the years. So before living together, set a list of ground rules that you and your partner can abide by. These could include simple things such as putting the toilet seat down after use or turning off the lights when leaving a room. If there’s something that you and your partner don’t agree on right away, be open to compromise so you can at least meet halfway. If you and your partner can get on board with the ground rules you have both set, you can be one step closer to a happy and peaceful married life.
