Top 3 Tips for a Rainy Season-Ready Home

Posted April 29, 2022 | Improvements that increase home value

It’s still officially the dry season here in the Philippines and yet we already experienced a couple of storms and low pressure areas which brought heavy rains and landslides. Climate change IS real, and we expect more storms and tropical depressions in the coming months due to La Niña. That’s why it’s never too early to prepare for the wet season – and here are few things you can do to prepare your home.

1. Check your roof and gutters

Now is the best time to get your trusty handyman to inspect your roof, especially if you’ve been living in your house for quite some time and you have no clue as to its current condition. Small damages and holes in your roof can easily be remedied with a sealant. But if there are certain portions that need fixing or replacing, it’s best to have to have it repaired now to mitigate the damage and prevent even bigger problems and expenses in the long run. Also, check your gutters and downspouts for built up debris such as leaves and clear them out to avoid clogging during heavy rainfall.

2. Clean up your backyard

Aside from a leaky roof, the rainy season also brings with it the spread of diseases such as dengue. Prevent your backyard from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria by cleaning up and organizing your outdoor area. Throw away, store, or turn over any containers that may fill up with water such as cans, old tires, and pails. Maintain pools and ponds properly to ensure that water circulates properly and does not remain stagnant.  Don’t forget to regularly clean your pets’ water bowls and refill with fresh water.

3. Cut down overextending branches

Summer is also the best time to do a little trimming and pruning in your garden, especially if you have big trees. Cut down heavy branches that are in close proximity to your home and might cause damage in the event that they snap and fall to your property during a storm. Also take note of old trees that might be uprooted and fall on your home – have these checked beforehand to prevent untoward accidents.

The rainy season may be a cause of concern for most homeowners, but with proper and regular home maintenance, you have nothing much to worry about.

Having peace of mind as a homeowner starts with knowing that your home is of standard quality and built to last. If you’re still looking for that dream home to call your own, make sure the house you buy not only looks good on the outside but from the inside as well. Aside from choosing a trusted and established developer, also check the building specifications to make sure they are at par with industry standards. A good, quality home should withstand the elements and natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes. After all, our home is our refuge and should keep our family safe and secure.
